Problem Statement
This startup company launched a media product 2 years ago with the goal of building up a free user base to begin and create a new feature set that would monetize the app and allow users to pay for a subscription on a monthly fee. Upon the healthy build of that free user base, It was time to design an experience that would allow returning users to to become paid members in the sign-in flow as well as new users to become paid members in the sign up flow.
Solution
In order to create a new feature set for the conversion of free users into paid users, I looked to create multiple avenues for that opportunity before and during use of the app so that no matter where the user turns, they are prompted with the information and chance to become a paid user and enhance their experience while using Flick Fission. This includes an immediate advertisement upon login/sign up, a notification if the user attempts to use a feature that is exclusive to paid members, and a location on the navigation bar to always access this information and learn more about paid subscriptions and the different plans available.
Roles & Responsobilities
My role in this project was to create design solutions using the UI/UX methodology I have learned over the course of my career and apply it to this media scenario. Looking to create directly to the business goals:
1. Create the opportunity for new users to subscribe to the premium product upon registration in the signup flow.
2. Create the opportunity for returning free users to become paid subscribers in the sign-in flow as well as within the product (once logged in).
While also factoring in the important information from the Product Manager:
1. The existing signup flow does not have a call to action upon registration that allows the user the opportunity to subscribe.
2. The existing flow does not have prominent calls to action throughout the free experience that allows the user the opportunity — or a compelling reason — to subscribe.
3. By creating a paid product with better features than the free experience and giving users the opportunity to upgrade to a better product, users will pay the subscription fee. This will lead to a profitable revenue stream.
